Tensing Pen is named for a little Tibetan Lhasa Apso (since passed away) named “Tensing” after the Himalayan Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay who accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary to the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953 — the first successful ascent of the world’s highest mountain. In Jamaica, the common name for your property is “yard” or “pen”. Thus the name, “Tensing Pen” became known as the little hotel with a dog that one passed on the way to the Lighthouse.

Located on the western tip of Jamaica, in Negril, Tensing pen has evolved into a unique collection of wood, thatch and cut-stone cottages. Set in a cultivated jungle of tropical plants each cottage features simple but elegant interiors crafted by local artisans from bamboo, mahogany, cedar and other local materials.

Each of the Tensing Pen cottages is totally unique. The units are hand-built from stone, wood, bamboo and thatch, inspired by the native Jamaican nature. Our lovely rooms are decorated stylishly, and feature individual Caribbean artistic elements unique to each cottage, creating the perfect luxury in Jamaican style.

Our villas, rooms and cottages are surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, giving a perfect feeling of privacy and intimacy. Most of our rooms offer unobstructed views of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

All rooms are equipped with refrigerators where you can have your favorite beer, wines, bottled waters, or sodas stocked (additional charge).

A tropical continental-style breakfast is included daily for all guests and is served daily from 7-11 AM in our open-air kitchen (see more info below).

This complimentary meal consists of Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain coffee, assorted teas, seasonal tropical fruits, cereals, fresh orange juice, toast & jam.
